New report from Baltic Deal “Agri-environmental measures in the Baltic Sea Region. – Advisory services, legislation & best practices”
The report “Agri-environmental measures in the Baltic Sea Region. – Advisory services, legislation & best practices” examines the advisory system; legislation and applied agro-environmental measures in seven countries around the Baltic Sea.
The report will form the basis of further work in the EU flagship project, Baltic Deal.
The intention is that the best agricultural practices in Sweden; Finland; Estonia; Latvia; Lithuania; Poland and Denmark should form the basis of a joint knowledge transnational platform on the internet.
This platform should inspire farmers and advisors around the Baltic Sea to solve the challenges with loss of nutrients to the Baltic Sea in a solid professional way. It should help put best practises in agriculture into work in terms of environmental initiatives as well as advisory methods.
The Baseline report provides a general view of the current situation, 2011, in the individual countries. It shows extensive differences between the environmental measures applied, and hence demonstrates new environmental paths for each country.
Constructed wetlands are used in large scale in Finland and Sweden, while other countries focus more on green winter cover in the form of winter crops or catch crops. In some countries the leaching of phosphorus is considered to be the main problem, while other countries focus more on nitrogen. Also there are extensive differences in the application and handling of manure and a common understanding between the countries around the Baltic Sea would definitely be of great advantage, when it comes to loss of nutrients.
